Welcome to Music Therapy Services of Fond du Lac County!!

MTS of FDL Co. started off as Musical Memories and was developed in 2003 when I was asked to work as a private Music Therapist with children and adults with Developmental Disabilities and Early Childhood. I was also working as a facility Music Therapist part-time at that time. Now working full-time at a long-term care facility and running Musical Memories gives me the chance to be able to work with a variety of populations and ages and to not be limited in what I can do. Musical Memories serves Fond du Lac, WI and the surrounding areas.

This website is a work in progress and I will be adding things as time goes on. Many of the Music and Activities Pages are still being worked on, so I do apologize if you come across these pages and not find any information.

On the left side of this page, you will find information on how to contact me, join a discussion board, leave comments, join me on Facebook and sign my guestbook.

On the right side of this page, you will find a weekly music session plan based on a theme I do that week (it can be adapted for various populations); a weekly news article; and a weekly blog on MT issues. I may also occasionally post a video of a song that works well or music clip.

Activities and Music on the respective pages are ones that I've created, borrowed from colleagues or adapted from various sources and lesson plans. If any of the songs or ideas are yours, please let me know and I will remove them or give proper credit where it is due. No product is being sold, nor will I accept money from anyone unless it is for Music Therapy purposes only.

Top 12 Reasons I Have A Job

Children are little creative scientists. If you ever watch a child, they experiment, test, draw, sing, dance, imagine, and play their way to learning. This is true for almost any type of learning they need, from learning the alphabet to learning how to throw a ball, learning right from wrong, and learning first words.

Music is one of the ways through which children learn. In fact, music itself is such a powerful tool for learning and growing that there’s an entire profession dedicated to it: Music Therapy.

According to the American Music Therapy Association, “Music Therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program.” Music therapists can target motor goals, learning goals, social goals, emotional goals, and even speech and communication goals through music-based interventions.

Now music therapy doesn't work only with children. Board-certified music therapists also work with teenagers, adults and older adults. In fact, it may be one of the few professions that can work from cradle-to-grave...from NICUs to hospices.

Music Therapy and MDS 3.0

As we started transitioning into the new MDS 3.0 software in my facility, I realized Music Therapy isn't fairly counted. Sure it has a place to document minutes and days, however, that's only if you have a doctor's order with treatment goal. In my long-term care facility, I do not get a doctor's order, just referrals--so I cannot count the minutes I see a resident. I finally contacted the AMTA to find out just how the new MDS 3.0 will work for those of us in long-term care facilities. Below is the response I got:

Info from Judy Simpson:

"Thanks for your email. I think everyone is excited and a little confused about the new MDS 3.0 :) AMTA has been in communication with CMS officials for the last several years attempting to get accurate recognition of MT on this document. Although we are still working with CMS to try and get additional edits to the new RAI manual, these are some guidelines available which should assist you in utilizing the new assessment form.

MT is listed with Recreational Therapy in Section O, Therapies. Days and minutes will be documented. It appears the MT will require a physician's order. We do not believe that reimbursement will be impacted by adding music therapy to this form but since MT is a part of the PPS payment, this documentation will help quantify services. MT has a definition in RAI Manual Appendix A-Glossary. The manual that explains Section O, does not provide the info on MT that we have requested, but we are still advocating for that change!
